Functional Shots: What Are They and How to Use Them?

Hello friends! Although it’s been a while, this triple-recipe post should make up for it. I’ve got three recipes using different flavors of functional shots from Tulua and they are all oh so good! Not only are they delicious, but there are also a tons of benefits. Some of the shots are ginger-based, while others use probiotics or cold-pressed juices.

They have a variety of Ginger Shots, Probiotic Shots, and Vitality Shots, all of which are delicious and high quality. Tulua makes their certified organic shots by cold-pressing the juices and using HPP (high-pressure processing), both of which help to maintain the nutrients. They also don’t use any preservatives or additives in their functional shots, so they have to stay refrigerated.

benefits of functional shots

Functional shots are a general term for wellness-promoting shots that give you a small dose of high-quality ingredients. Most of Tulua’s functional shots contain ginger, while some of the others get their functionality from tart cherry juice, probiotics, lemon, or turmeric.

Ginger is such an all-star. Especially when it’s freshly juiced! Ginger is anti-inflammatory, can help with digestion, can reduce nausea, and is an antioxidant. Ginger also can slow the growth of bacteria, which can be good for fighting infections – perfect for cold and flu season!

Now let’s get to the recipes!

1. tart cherry mocktail

tart cherry mocktail

First up, we have a wintertime-inspired Tart Cherry Mocktail using the tart cherry and cucumber probiotic shot. This is one of my favorite shots that they have; the tart cherry is so perfectly sour but balanced out with the cucumber juice, making it ideal for a mocktail!

Some great benefits of tart cherry juice include how it helps with muscle recovery and reducing soreness after exercise. Each little shot has the equivalent of 8 ounces of tart cherry juice! Although this one doesn’t have ginger, it does have an added benefit of 1 billion CFU’s of the probiotic Bacilius coagulans GBI-30 6086. Great for gut health, which you know I love.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 1 container Tulua tart cherry cucumber shot
  • 1 can citrus sparkling water
  • 1/2 of a lime juiced
  • 1-2 drops stevia optional
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary

Instructions

  • Fill glass with ice and add all ingredients.
  • Garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

2. creamy pomegranate dressing

This salad dressing uses the Pomegranate Ginger shot, which is strictly made of just pomegranate and ginger juice! One of my favorite tips for making a creamy yet dairy-free dressing is by blending in some nuts. I used slivered almonds (without the skins) from Trader Joe’s for this one, but cashews would also work well.

The salad has roasted kabocha squash, walnuts, sliced apple and red onion, mixed greens and arugula, and a sprinkle of goat cheese. Yum!

Instructions

3. sweet potato, turmeric, and ginger smoothie

sweet potato turmeric and ginger smoothie; benefits of ginger shots

During the winter months, I’m not always wanting a cold smoothie first thing in the morning. However, this smoothie is different and I can drink it year-round! When you add warming spices, like ginger and turmeric, the smoothie is easier to digest and feels a lot cozier. I also use fewer frozen ingredients in it, so it’s not icy cold.

This smoothie uses the Tulua Turmeric Ginger Vitality Shot Turmeric Pineapple Ginger Vitality shot, which is such an amazing flavor combination. Like ginger, turmeric is also anti-inflammatory and has antioxidant properties. Turmeric is best absorbed in the presence of black pepper, which this shot does contain.
